Nematode-resistant grafted 'Typica' arabica coffee plants
Integrated Coffee Technologies anticipates first sales of nematode resistant plants through our Kona Coffee Nursery division in September 2005. These plants contain a C. liberica ('Fukunaga') root system grafted to a traditional Kona 'Typica' arabica top. The rootstock comes from trees at the UH Kona Experiment Station that have been shown to be resistant to the coffee nematode that is present in about 85% of the Kona growing area. The rootstock has been produced in tissue culture from the original trees to assure that the resistance has not decreased or been lost due to outcrossing as the trees are not self-fertile. Product will be available the second quarter 2006. Larger amounts will be available later in the fall. For further information see our Kona Coffee Nursery home page.
